The Conflation Is Not Harmless
Sometime around 2021, the word "generative" got stolen. It migrated from creative coding communities — where it had a precise, decades-old meaning — into marketing copy for AI image tools. Midjourney called its outputs "generative." OpenAI's image tools were "generative AI." The art press followed, and suddenly everything unexpected-looking became generative art. This is wrong, and the wrongness matters.
Vera Molnár was writing FORTRAN programs to produce systematic visual output in the 1960s. Harold Cohen spent 20 years building AARON, an autonomous drawing system, before most people had a home computer. Casey Reas co-created Processing in 2001 specifically to give artists a programming language for algorithmic image-making. None of these practices resemble typing a sentence into a text box and receiving an image.
Calling both things "generative art" is not a loose synonym — it is a category error that erases 60 years of practice, collapses very different theories of authorship, and makes it harder to talk precisely about either medium. This article draws the line back.
What Generative Art Actually Is
Generative art is any practice in which the artist designs a system — a set of rules, algorithms, constraints, or processes — and that system produces the artwork, either autonomously or semi-autonomously. The artist's creative act is the design of the system. The system's execution is the final work.
This definition, consistent with how the V&A, Tate, and researchers like Philip Galanter use the term, has two critical components. First, the artist builds the system — they don't merely operate it. Second, the system has a degree of autonomy that creates outputs the artist did not directly specify. The tension between authored rules and unspecified outcomes is the medium's engine.
Sol LeWitt's Wall Drawings make this clear without any technology involved. LeWitt wrote instruction sets — "Draw lines from corners, sides, and center of the wall to random points on the wall" — and others executed them. The artwork is the instruction set. Each execution is a new iteration of the same generative system. There is no AI. There is no computer. There is a rule-based process with emergent output.
In digital practice, this translates to artists writing code in Processing, p5.js, GLSL, or custom environments. The code encodes the system — noise functions, recursive rules, particle physics, cellular automata. When you run it, the system produces an image or animation that nobody drew. The artist's fingerprint is in the logic, not the pixels.
The key attribute is authorship of the process. The generative artist does not delegate to a system someone else built — they build the system themselves. Understanding what it does, why it does it, and how to change its behavior is intrinsic to the practice.
What AI Image Generation Actually Is
Tools like Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, and DALL-E 3 are latent diffusion models. They work by learning a compressed representation of image-space from billions of image-text pairs, then learning to reverse a noise-addition process guided by text embeddings. When you type a prompt, the model navigates this latent space toward a region that satisfies your description and renders an image from it.
The process is extraordinary. The models are engineering achievements that required years of research and compute budgets most artists could never access. The outputs can be aesthetically stunning. None of that is in dispute.
What the practice involves for the user is directing — choosing words, adjusting parameters, selecting from outputs, iterating on prompts. This is closer to art direction than system design. The "system" in this case — the neural network, its weights, its training pipeline — was built by Stability AI, Midjourney, or OpenAI. The user operates it. Even with sophisticated techniques like LoRA fine-tuning or ControlNet, the user shapes an existing system rather than authoring one from scratch.
This does not diminish AI art as a creative practice. It means it is a different creative practice, with a different relationship to authorship, process, and the machine.
Three Structural Differences
Who Builds the System
In generative art, the artist authors the system. They write the code, define the parameters, choose the mathematical functions, and understand — at least in principle — why the system behaves as it does. The unexpected output emerges from their logic.
In AI image generation, the system was built by engineers at a company, trained on data the user didn't curate, using architectures the user didn't design. The user's creative input happens at the interface layer: prompts, sliders, seed numbers. The model's behavior is largely opaque — even to its creators.
The generative artist is a system author. The AI art user is a system operator. Both are legitimate roles. They are not the same role.
Process Transparency
A generative artwork is, in principle, fully reproducible and explicable. If you have the source code and the seed, you get the same output. The system is transparent to its author. You can trace why a particular pattern appears — it comes from this noise function, these parameters, this recursive rule.
A latent diffusion model is a black box with billions of parameters. Nobody — not the people who built it — can tell you precisely why a given prompt produced a given pixel arrangement. The model has learned correlations from data in ways that are not interpretable in human terms. The artist's intent enters as language and exits as pixels, with an opaque transformation in between.
This opacity is not a flaw in AI tools — it is a feature of how neural networks work. But it means the relationship between authorial intention and output is fundamentally different from generative code, where the artist can inspect, modify, and understand every layer of the process.
What "Unexpected" Means
Both practices can produce images that surprise their makers. But the nature of that surprise differs completely.
In generative art, surprise emerges from the complexity of the system the artist designed. You wrote a rule for how particles interact, and watching thousands of particles follow that rule produces patterns you didn't anticipate. The surprise is earned — it comes from your own logic operating at a scale you couldn't fully simulate mentally. Casey Reas described this as "the machine revealing the implications of the code."
In AI image generation, surprise comes from the model's training data and its interpolation of your prompt. The unexpected visual was somewhere in the model's latent space before you typed anything. You steered toward it, but you didn't build the territory. The surprise is a discovery rather than an emergence.
One surprise is what your system does. The other is what someone else's system contains. These are genuinely different experiences, and conflating them obscures what makes each practice compelling.

Why the Confusion Happened
Three forces converged to collapse the distinction.
Marketing language. "Generative AI" is a product category name chosen by technology companies. It describes what the models do — they generate outputs — not what the user does. The term was never meant to be an art historical claim, but it landed in a cultural conversation where "generative" already meant something else.
The NFT moment. Between 2020 and 2022, NFT platforms used "generative art" to describe algorithmically varied profile-picture collections — 10,000 slight variations of the same character, produced by randomly combining trait layers. This was closer to graphic design automation than generative art as a practice, but it exposed millions of people to the word in a new context.
Aesthetic surface similarity. Both AI art and generative art can produce images that look abstract, unexpected, and "computational." If you see two images side by side — one from a noise-field algorithm, one from Midjourney — they might look equally strange. Audiences unfamiliar with either process have no visual cue to distinguish them. The confusion is understandable from the outside. From the inside, the practices feel nothing alike.
What Gets Lost in the Conflation
When AI art and generative art get lumped together, the specific intellectual contribution of generative practice disappears. The question "how did you make this?" — which in generative art opens up conversations about mathematics, systems theory, emergence, and code — becomes "what prompt did you use?" The depth of one practice gets absorbed by the surface vocabulary of the other.
It also makes attribution collapse. If a gallery describes both a GLSL shader by a creative coder who spent months on it and a Midjourney output as "generative art," they have implicitly equated the skill, time, and conceptual investment behind each. That is not fair to either practice.
Finally, it erases history. Vera Molnár, Frieder Nake, Georg Nees, Manfred Mohr, Harold Cohen — these artists built the field from nothing in the 1960s and 70s, before anyone had personal computers. Describing a 2023 Stable Diffusion image as "generative art" without qualification treats that history as irrelevant.
Precise language is not pedantry. It is respect for the people who built a discipline.

AI image generation is about intent communication — expressing what you want to a system that has absorbed the visual output of human civilization and learned to navigate it. Both collaborations are legitimate. Neither erases the other. But they are different kinds of collaboration, with different histories, different skill sets, and different theories of what it means to make something. Calling them both "generative art" does not honor that complexity — it discards it.
